Utseoritselaju Uwatse, a Nigerian man, was found guilty of raping another college student in Ireland and was given a four-year prison sentence by an Irish court.

The Irish Mirror reported on Monday that Uwatse was found guilty of one count of rape in March 2023 for the offense that happened on April 20, 2018.

On the day of the incident, a group of college students got together for drinks in Cratloe Student Village before heading into Limerick City for a night out, according to Detective Garda McGrath's testimony to prosecuting attorney Conor Devally.

The victim, who testified that the group visited Smyth's pub before moving on to Molloy's late bar in Limerick, where she met Uwatse, a person she knew from her social circle, according to McGrath, was one of the group's members.
Uwatse and the victim were captured on camera hugging each other that evening in surveillance footage that was shown in court.
According to testimony given in court, Uwatse picked up the victim, took her into a bedroom, and then placed her on the bed. There, she remembers him taking off her shoes before she dozed out. The next morning when she awoke early, her garments did not feel right with the convinct lying next to her.
